Anybody using Ning as a Learning Network for their class? Other solutions you feel good about?

I would like to experiment setting up a social network for my Computer Apps 2 class.

I can see that oetn.org has their own domain name - (That's why we can alI access it from school)

I was wondering if anyone has been using it at the high school level as a learning platform. Or a similar product.

Many of my roadblocks come from the red tape involved with unblocking sites, loading software, etc.
